Creating Your Own Computer Art Samples
Minimizing rejection opportunities while maximizing marketing time within a smaller budget appeals to me. Printed photographs are impossible to enlarge or shrink for trial in different size or shape formats. It might not be appropriate in their format and I won’t know until I receive a rejection letter if my only images are original artwork and submission slides/photographs.
Printing a few here & there every once in awhile of any of the below ideas is fine - it doesn’t take much of your time or much ink but if you need a hundred to a thousand or so though … it will probably be much more cost effective to have them printed professionally.
Submission Slides or Prints - A $1,000 or less digital camera in the hands of a traditional artist do NOT replace fine art submission slides and prints by a professional fine art photographer. Fine art photography requires specialized knowledge and understanding which most casual photographers have not learned. After several years of digital and website fine art photography, I can still spend an entire day taking photos, changing the lighting and trying again for 5 quality, acceptable painting files for my online Galleries. Seeing my painting and my digital photos on screen printed convinced me to leave real fine art photography to the professionals for submission slides and prints.
Greeting Cards or Post Cards - I print greeting card or post card samples on an inkjet printer as well as hand-painted watercolor cards for some samples to hand out to prospective buyers. Greeting card packets for inkjet printers are available at large drug, discount chain department, office supply stores and usually art supply stores also - I find them to be reasonably priced. Be sure to put your contact information on the card including website and email address.
Brochures, Handouts and Signs - Brochure packets for inkjet printers are also available reasonably priced. I use my digital photos for brochures, art class handouts, and painting demonstration handouts. I can make one and take it to a copy center for bulk copies so I can easily personalize it with dates, times, store name and location for handouts or I can print a couple as I need one.
Business Cards - Business card packets for printers are available but many times they are a real pain to print on a home printer. They get stuck quite easily and you can ruin lots of them trying to print on them - it hasn’t seemed to matter what brand I’ve tried - they are not fun in my experience - I upload my own art to Vista Print and buy my cards online from them because it is much less frustrating and time consuming for me. I upgrade to the premium cards. The magnetic business cards are quite nice as well.
