Houston Traffic Reports and Freeway Names

When I first moved to Houston from Iowa, I could not understand the traffic reports or if they affected me on my way to work. Several newcomers have mentioned the same confusion to me so I created this page for anyone who is not familiar with the various names for these freeways. I love Houston and I love living here. The people are friendly, helpful and fun…unless they are in a car on the freeway.

There is always road construction everywhere in Houston. I’m driving to work one day and it is fine. The very next day, suddenly the road is all tore up and either part or all of it is blocked and I’m stuck in the lane that is blocked trying to get over. Start early … and in Houston you can still quite easily be late. Start late … you are guaranteed to be late :) Always check the traffic reports before leaving home if you are driving the freeways! It may help you avoid a parking lot situation (AKA Houston Freeway).

Freeway Known As Names

I-45 North is known as the North Freeway {it goes to Dallas}.

I-45 South is known as the Gulf Freeway {it ends in Galveston}.

I-59 North is known as the Eastex Freeway {it goes through Cleveland}.

I-59 South is known as the Southwest Freeway {it goes to Victoria}.

I-10 West is known as the Katy Freeway {it goes through Katy}.

I-10 East is known as the East Freeway or Baytown Freeway {it goes through Baytown}.

I-10 goes east and west and crosses I-45, I-59, the beltway-tollway, and 610 Loop.

290 is known as the Northwest Freeway and it crosses Highway 6 / FM 1960 and goes to Austin.

North Belt, South Belt, East Belt, West Belt, Sam Houston Parkway, the Beltway, and Sam Houston Tollway - {yes the Tollway part costs!} are different sections of the Beltway 8 freeway. The Tollway is well-marked with signs before becoming a toll road so anyone not wanting to pay can exit.

610 LOOP IS YOUR FRIEND

according to me! (though NOT during rush hour)

610 Loop is a circle inside Houston and yes, I have driven completely around it though that can be tricky in places!

If I can find any part of 610 Loop, I can get myself home eventually. It has exits to I-10 East and West, I-45 North and South, I-59 North and South and to 290.

The view from the top of the Ship Channel Bridge on 610 Loop East is a favorite view of mine.

290 and I-10 Katy Traffic

290 and I-10 Katy are traffic packed any time night or day - rush hour can mean inching along for hours. Many businesses along the 290 corridor have flex working hours for their employees.

My daughter is a Realtor here in the Houston Katy area if you are needing help finding a new home or selling an old one.
