Quinceanera Celebrations
Texas has a large Hispanic / Latino population … lots of really nice people (all that I’ve met or worked with!) - they have some wonderful festivals and customs - I’ve never been to a Quinceanera but I have heard a lot about how important they are to a Hispanic girl. My understanding is that there is a lot of preparation involved and that Latino girls dream about their Quinceanera the way Midwest girls dream about their Sweet 16 parties. It is nearly as important as their wedding if I understand correctly!

Growing up … rites of passage … I love thinking about the happiness and joy these celebrations bring to a young girl … I didn’t have a Sweet 16 party … I had never even had a birthday party until I was 30 years old … I believe these family celebrations have to be a shining light in their lives … and there is a movie coming out about them too - I do not know if it is coming to Houston or not … but I would love to see this movie …. I cannot go back and have all the magic of a coming of age party … but I can enjoy someone else’s happiness and joy!
Winner of both the Sundance Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, Quinceanera to quote from my friend Jean’s blog
You can see the trailer or the official movie website.
My friend Jean has a few lovely designs on tshirts and more in honor of this movie and these wonderful Latino celebrations! Check out her shop to see them!! One of her accomplishments (she has many!) is speaking and reading Japanese … this language looks really tough to me … and she is a terrific artist too!
I have a friend that loves to Salsa Dance - she enjoys it very much and says it is terrific exercise. I wonder if there is any Salsa Dance music on the soundtrack? Since I haven’t seen the movie or heard the soundtrack, I do not know - if I can remember to ask my friend, I am guessing she will know.
4/3/07: A Hispanic friend of ours has daughter who is going to be fifteen … I asked him if they were going to have a Quinceanera for her - he told me no … he said it is more of a religious ceremony and since they are not particularly religious … they will have a Sweet 16 party for her instead. And I never did get to see the movie … maybe one of these days.
